What All Business Students Should Know About Fraud

Abstract

While the majority of fraud examination courses are taught from the accounting perspective and geared for students who are accounting majors, there is a need for all students pursuing careers in business to be familiar with the red flags of fraud as well as the impact fraud has on an organization. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the importance of fraud awareness for all business students and provide suggestions for incorporating it throughout the curriculum.
Providing students with real world examples and discussing alternative courses of action help to equip them with tools and strategies to cope with workplace pressures. The Internet and YouTube provide a wealth of resources that can be adapted for classroom use. From “American Greed” videos to case exercises, these resources can be incorporated into a wide range of courses. Exposing students to real world business situations and discussing alternate courses of action will help them develop their own strategies for making difficult ethical decisions.
