The U.S. Federal Budget Project

Abstract

The U.S. Federal Budget Project is intended for use in undergraduate and graduate government and not-for-profit accounting courses, or public policy courses. We find that students benefit from analyzing the United States federal budget and national debt and develop critical thinking skills through their analyses. The project achieves four primary learning objectives and after completing the project students should be able to: describe the federal budget process and accounting model, explain the roles and responsibilities of key federal organizations and agencies with budgetary and spending responsibilities, understand the inherent political factors involved in the federal budgeting process, and develop a presentation that outlines federal budget recommendations.
