Quiz Re-Quiz to Motivate Students

Fri, October 7, 6:00 to 7:30pm, Boston Marriott Quincy, TBA

Abstract

The Idea:
• Provide clear advanced guidance on what portion of the material will be quizzed.
• Begin the class with a short quiz, taken individually.
• Follow that with students sitting with their designated team, of approximately 5 students, to retake the exact same quiz.
• Review the quiz questions and their solutions
• Award grades based on the average of their individual and team scores
• Use the remainder of the class for problem solving demonstrations, Q & A, and guidance on preparation for the next class.

Expected Benefits:
Gets Students to:
• Distribute their study efforts
• Arrive on time for class
• Discuss what they have learned with one another
• Feel some peer pressure not to arrive empty-headed
Allows the Instructor to:
• Speak to prepared students
• Listen to active discussions, about the material, between students
• Avoid repeating set lectures already made available to the students outside of class time.
• Take more time for Q & A and problem solving

Tools to Make it Work:
• Use of a Learning Management System (LMS), such as Blackboard
• Create recorded .mp4 lecture files, preferably short in duration, i.e., a single learning objective long or around 10 minutes.
• Create recorded .mp4 exercise and problem solution files, preferably short in duration, i.e., a single exercise or problem in length.
• I happen to use Camtasia, because the Khan Academy started with that tool.
