Leveraging Online Testing to Increase Student Learning

Abstract

This paper reports the comparison of using an enhanced on-line testing strategy versus traditional, in-class paper testing. Specifically, the experimental group was four sections of an undergraduate auditing class where six on-line tests were taken by the students outside of class. The control group was also four sections of the same course where three in-class, traditional paper tests were administered. When taking the same final exam, the results indicate that the experimental group scored significantly higher. Additionally, the students highly rated their experience with the six on-line tests as a method of assessment in the course.
