Previous studies have suggested that research productivity in accounting is a function of the institutional prestige of doctoral programs, and the institutional prestige of resident schools. This study adds the publication productivity of the dissertation supervisor as a new antecedent. Using a sample of highly successful academic accountants, the paper shows that this mentorship effect adds to the overall variance in research productivity that could be attributable to institutional prestige and support. Implications for academic accounting are offered.
