A Longitudinal Analysis of Authors who Publish in Elite Accounting Journals

Sat, April 18, 9:05 to 10:45am, Renaissance Asheville Hotel, TBA

Abstract

In this study, we use a longitudinal approach to examine the research productivity of faculty who publish Research Articles in the top-6 accounting journals from 1990-2013, a 24-year window. Specifically, for faculty with a least one top-6 Research Article publication at any point from 1990-2013, we calculate 1) mean top-3 and top-6 publications for the first 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, and 24 years post-doctoral graduation, and 2) average annual top-6 publication rates for individual faculty based on graduating in one of eight three-year subperiods from 1990-2013. We identify a subset of prolific authors who continually publish top-6 Research Articles at a high rate for an extended period of time, and provide new publication benchmarking data for institutions that expect or require top-3 and/or top-6 publications for promotion and tenure (P&T). Accordingly, this study assists current accounting faculty in evaluating their own top-6 research productivity, and accounting program and college administrators in assessing realistic top-6 annual review and P&T standards for faculty based on their schools’ mission.
