University sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites provide an excellent opportunity to provide community service activities. Operation of a VITA site on campus not only provides recognition to the institution but also provides experiential learning for the accounting student that is difficult to achieve in a typical income tax course. Training and certifying students for preparing VITA income tax returns is often an obstacle. Staffing the VITA site with qualified students can also be problematic.
My students are prepared for the VITA program in my Income Tax I class. My goal in this class is to have students familiarized with the VITA process, trained on the Taxwise software and eager to volunteer at our VITA site. I’d like to share my procedures and materials for others to use in considering the possible establishment of a VITA site on their university campus.
