Instructor Generated YouTube Videos in a Financial Accounting Class: A Useful Purpose Based on Actual Usage and Student Perception

Sat, April 16, 9:05 to 10:45am, Grand Hyatt Atlanta, TBA

Abstract

Online learning, while growing in importance in higher education, also faces numerous challenges. The purpose of this study is to provide information to help effectively integrate online content and technology in a course based on actual experience in introductory financial accounting classes taught in hybrid and traditional formats. The instructor created Youtube videos to help students work through accounting problems, in addition to lecture videos and information videos. The overall goal of this study was to determine the relationship between instructor generated videos in an introductory accounting course and student engagement and satisfaction. Hybrid and, to some degree, traditional students reported watching the videos and found them to be helpful. Motivation for viewing the videos varied by type of student. Going forward, students almost unanimously believe that instructor generated videos should be used in class. However, they do not necessarily want video classes to replace traditional classes. It can be implied that such videos would be particularly useful in upper level accounting classes given the favorable perceptions reported in particular by accounting and finance majors.
