Abstract

The IRS Voluntary Income Tax Assistance program (VITA) has become an excellent avenue for providing practical application of learning outcomes for individual income tax courses, developing communication and fact gathering skills, and engaging students in the benefits of community service. An active learning strategy utilizing the VITA program is for each student to be charged with managing the VITA site for a day. The teaching strategy fosters a student’s understanding and practice of professionalism. The learning extends beyond tax skills to stressing higher interpersonal and communication skills, and developing strategies for managing an operation. Typical VITA participation does not call for each student to engage in a leadership function; therefore, this approach yields a broader perspective for students and builds confidence in accounting knowledge and skills development.
