As a result of his bookkeeping school, James Bennett was one of the earliest pioneers in developing accounting into a broad based occupation that subsequently developed into a profession. This paper will recognize Bennett and provide insight into the development of accounting professionalism in the US by using signaling theory. As mentioned by Harry C. Bentley, James Arlington Bennett (1788-1863) was a "dramatic figure in the days when double entry bookkeeping was making its earliest strides in America" (Bentley, p. 26).
