Writing to Learn (WTL) is a practice of solidifying ones understanding of the material presented. Auditing serves as the writing intense course in the accounting curriculum, with students complaining and reluctant to complete a research paper in an accounting class. Students do not acknowledge the writing of a research paper in accounting as necessary, although written communication is a prerequisite skill in most accounting jobs. This paper applies various English composition-writing techniques, such as double entry writing columns and free writes in an undergraduate level-auditing course. We remove the dreaded research paper and instead replace the writing requirement, with case analysis applying double entry writing columns matching audit tests to accounts and applying theory to practice via substantive audit tests. Additionally, we use the free write and journal process for the vital few lecture take ways.
