Massive changes face the accounting profession and higher education. The profession needs to hire more technically adept, computer- and Excel-savvy graduates with strong communication skills. Currently, many college and university accounting programs face shrinking budgets and increased competition from state-wide and national programs—that often offer on-line courses and massive, open on-line courses [MOOCs]. This paper examines the history of MOOCs and how they will increasingly impact higher education and the accounting profession.
