Undergraduate students are used to working book problems where the information is neatly organized and there is generally a right or wrong answer. To help introduce students to the "real world", I have them work in groups to analyze the financial records of a non-profit and then offer the organization recommendations. Most of the organizations provide financial statements and multiple years of general ledger data. Students use various Excel functions to organize the data and find patterns. A formal report and presentation is prepared.
