As information technology develops in teaching environments, more professors assign computer-based projects. The purpose of this study is to improve the quality of computer-based homework
assignments. Three groups of students in financial accounting and reporting (intermediate accounting) classes are assigned sets of assignments. The first group has identical assignments among provided to the students. The second group has assignments in the same format as the first but with randomized numbers such that each student has different numbers. The third group has randomized numbers with a self-grading function built into the assignment. A pilot-test shows students in the third group exhibit the highest performance on the assignment. A survey administered to students who participated in the project demonstrates that the third group also has the highest level of satisfaction with the assignment.
