We extend the diversity and inclusion literature by exploring the experiences of historically underrepresented individuals (HUI), including females, racial minorities, and members of the LGBTQ+ community in accounting education. We conducted semi-structured interviews to document 16 HUI accounting faculty’s experiences. Analysis of interview transcripts identified five major themes: discrimination, support, pressure, representation, and the current institutional environment. In addition, specific quotes interwoven with the findings provide illuminating insights into the state of diversity and inclusion in accounting schools and departments. Overall, our analysis reveals that while there have been some improvements in HUIs’ experiences with diversity and inclusion, biases and discriminatory practices remain firmly grounded.
