In Event: Effective Learning Strategies Poster Session C
In Poster Session: Poster Sessions C: Room 1
The purpose of this teaching case is to provide educators with a project-based exercise that uses Intuit’s QuickBooks Online (QBO) to learn hands-on Accounting Information Systems concepts. This assignment gives students an opportunity to learn the revenue and procurement cycles while applying basic accounting principles using one of the most widely-adopted accounting information systems for small businesses. The learning objectives include:
Setting up QBO accounts, companies, and accountant access
Creating revenue cycle classes (e.g., Customers, Products, Services, Sales Tax) and processes (e.g., Estimates, Invoices, Cash Sales, Receipt of Payments, Refunds)
Creating procurement cycle classes (e.g., Vendors, Products, Expenses) and processes (e.g., Purchase Orders, Bills, Paying Bills, Expenses)
Entering Journal Entries
Generating Financial Statements (e.g., Balance Sheets, Income Statements)
This is a simple, yet effective case that can help students learn the application of accounting principles while teaching them how to navigate QBO as they create their own business and enter individualized fictitious transactions that follow pre-set rules. It is accompanied by YouTube videos that allow students to complete this assignment asynchronously with minimal instructor intervention.
This workshop session will include details of the individualized assignment, grading tips and its teaching effectiveness.
