Increasing Student Participation in Online and Live Classrooms

Tue, May 25, 3:30 to 4:30pm, Virtual, TBA

Abstract

Encouraging students to participate has always been a challenge, but even more so when classes are held in the midst of a global pandemic. In this workshop, participants will learn best practices for encouraging lively and thought-provoking participation, applicable to both in-person and online classes. By the end of the workshop, participants will be better equipped to develop student confidence, encourage lively discussion, and create an atmosphere that students will remember forever.

This session will focus on concrete actions to plan and execute your class sessions, applicable practices from various classroom philosophies, and identification of student contribution styles in order to encourage them to participate further. We will also discuss some of the key research on what affects participation within accounting classes, including studies that compare synchronous to asynchronous environments. While this workshop will further your teaching skills, the true beneficiaries of this workshop will ultimately be your students, as they will develop confidence in communicating and skills to become leaders in in their future workplaces.
