Yes, it IS possible. We use Google sheets in Zoom breakout rooms for teamwork. We also use Top Hat to engage with students in real-time for polls, quizzes, and attendance purposes.
Google sheets with Zoom breakout rooms are used to connect with our students. Student teams work on accounting problems in their team’s specialized Google sheet. The instructor then provides real-time feedback on each team’s Google sheet. The students can talk to each other in their team’s breakout rooms. The instructor has no need switch to different breakout rooms as the feedback is typed and highlighted directly on the Google sheet while the students are working on the problem. Students can type questions on the sheet also.
Students appreciate the immediate feedback. They also appreciate the chance to chat with their team without fear of judgment by the professor. Students engage with the professor, the material, AND each other during this activity.
Top Hat works seamlessly with Canvas via single sign on technology for our school. We easily promote conversation with students by using planning polls and quizzes, or “on the fly” polls when the class needs to change gears for a few minutes. Attendance is simple with Top Hat. The reports generated allow for classroom improvements by identifying challenging content for students. Data generated can also facilitate university program assessment initiatives.
