Integrating Data Analytics into the Accounting Curriculum: Incorporating Computerized Practical Learning Components

Abstract

For our accounting upper division courses, we have redesigned several courses to provide both traditional and practical learning opportunities, as well as data analytics. These courses include a traditional lecture and experiential learning in data analytics. The courses also incorporate a computerized practice set that allows students to work in Microsoft Excel and Access, Sage50, and PowerBI platforms. This session will outline how this redesign was implemented in these courses and how it can be done at any university. We will also discuss approaches to avoid and best practices for including this type of practical experiences. The focus of all redesign efforts should be on the additional benefits that are provided to the students. We will engage the audience to provide questions, insights, and their observations on the use of computerized practice sets in upper division accounting courses.

The attendees will gain insights and best practices on how to operationalize practical learning applications in accounting courses. The benefits to students will also be discussed, as well as the pedagogical benefits to the accounting curriculum.
