This qualitative phenomenological study explores information technology integration in a postmerger environment. We explored the perceptions and lived experiences of midlevel and first-line managers in a manufacturing business environment when integrating information technology systems. Interviews were conducted with 14 participants to explore the central research question of what is the nature of the entropy phenomenon in postmerger integration. The process school, which blends the strategic and organizational schools of thought, forms the basis of our study. The results identify 35 major and 80 minor descriptors. Among the major descriptors, participants’ perception of loss emerged as a central theme; 86% of participants perceived the merger in terms of loss similar to the loss of a family member. The results of this study provide guidance that enables managers to anticipate and plan to mitigate the negative issues and increase the possibility of a successful merger outcome.
