Description:
Research indicates even “low-stakes” writing assignments can positively impact the development of a student’s formal or high-stakes written communication skills. Students must think earlier and more seriously about their future career endeavors, but may need a nudge or an incentive. An approach used in Intermediate I is a win-win combination of low-stakes writing and career exploration activities.
Identify several professional or career-related activities (i.e., career fairs, prominent guest lecturers, mock interviews, etc.) from which students can choose a required minimum number, and afterward require them to submit a self-reflective written summary (not mere attendance) to earn grading credit. Provide one or two prompts specific to the activity, and always ask students to describe their most significant personal takeaway(s) and action plan changes going forward.
There are no right-or-wrong answers which frees students to write on matters of personal relevance and in their own words. Detailed writing style feedback is not required; however, the professor can identify students with serious writing deficiencies and suggest they seek assistance from a writing center. Benefits: Students practice writing and learn more about professional careers, and the professor has an opportunity to become better acquainted with his/her students.
