Abstract

Professor Brands developed a new approach to teaching Controllership. The course exposes and familiarizes each student with the various activities and practices of modern Controllers. It was designed to develop the student's ability to understand controllership responsibilities, as well as accounting techniques and approaches, while practicing the skills that are needed to make ethical profit-maximizing decisions. A Controller is the company’s chief operational accounting expert. The Controller serves as the company’s “go-to” person for all things accounting-related. The role of the Controller has moved beyond plant controller and standard cost analysis.
In addition to addressing traditional and advanced managerial accounting concepts and practices, other Controller related activities such as organizational structure and control, governance, sustainability, corporate social responsibility, performance measurement, risk management, XBRL reporting, IFRS, and ethics are functions that controllers of the millennium may manage in their organizations. Finally, throughout the entire course, there is an emphasis on the effect that information technology and the modern manufacturing and service environment are having in the workplace as well of the complexities associated with emerging issues in global business environment.


Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:
➢Explain the history and evolution of the Controllership function.

➢Describe the basic principles of corporate governance.
➢Describe Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
➢Explain the basic principles of sustainability.
➢Describe and apply performance measurement applications.
➢Describe enterprise risk management.
➢Explain how performance measurement and strategic planning are integrated
➢Explain how business intelligence is used in performance measurement.
➢Describe the controller’s role as a Strategic Partner on his or her company’s management team.
➢Explains how a Controller addresses global reporting issues such as International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
➢Describe eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) applications.
➢Explain the role and responsibility of the Controller in ethical decision-making.
➢Complete an Academic Final Research Project on a Controllership-related topic from the course.
