An analysis of a sample of students from one University over nine years found that freshmen who came as accounting majors and graduated represent less than one-third of undergraduate accounting graduates. So most accounting majors decide on accounting after coming to college. How do students make this decision? This paper finds an interesting relationship for one University: most accounting graduates start college in another major. This paper extends an argument made in other research that departments of accounting should consider an investment in recruiting into the major from top students in Principles of Accounting classes, as previous research indicates contacting potential majors in the introductory course is productive.
