Hyun Chu Kim will address becoming an embedded librarian as a way to partner with faculty and to mentor student researchers. In recent years, there has been a shift away from the concept of the library as a space and toward the idea of the library as a service. The goal of embedded librarianship is to take this one step further — from a service to a true partnership. The term “embedded librarianship” is used to describe the work of an academic librarian, who participates in an academic course on an ongoing basis. Being an embedded librarian requires a direct and interactive approach. An embedded librarian identifies students' and faculty needs and delivers required resources before they ask. She will present how a librarian becomes embedded through the learning management system Desire2Learn (D2L), as a non-grading instructor in an Asian studies core course. As an example, Ms. Kim will use the introductory course for all Asian Studies majors, ASIA 3001, which covers traditional and contemporary cultures of East and South Asia, especially China, Japan, Korea, and India. This approach allows a librarian to partner with faculty in creating a module for research discussions and/or adding learning objects like research guides in D2L where students spend most of their academic time, thereby helping undergraduates succeed in their research in Asian studies.
