From the Tourism Activities to the Tourism Industry:

• In Event: Transitions in Societies and Cultures in Asia, 17th – Early 20th centuries

Abstract

Leisure, recreation, travel, tourism are parts of human life. However, the ways to do and the contents of them in the modern are quite different to the past, and certainly there was a tendency to spread worldwide from the west to the east. During the Japanese-rule period, the General Governor of Taiwan introduced the system of a week, re-regulated the lifestyle and the pace of life, built the sightseeing spots, and created the time and the spaces for tourism. I’ll investigate the formation and development of the tourism subjects (visitors), the tourism media (carriers, hotels, restaurants, travel agencies and so forth) and the tourism objects (the resource and facility of tourism, sightseeing spots) , in other words the factors of tourism system, and verify when did the tourism activities become the tourism industry, what were the powers to industrialize the tourism activities, and what were the level and limit have Taiwan tourism industry develop in the colonial period following the worldwide tendency. I believe this is an important subject in the history of tourism, colonial history and social history.
