Using Mica Nava’s concepts of rooted and visceral cosmopolitanism, this paper considers the diverse Hong Kong fan receptions of mainland-based music idol Li Yuchun, with regard to cultural differences between Hong Kong and mainland P.R.C. fandoms.
Attention is paid to questions of fan affect, gender issues (particularly attitudes toward Li Yuchun's Zhongxing or gender neutral characteristics), relationships among fans, and travel to the mainland. The central question of the paper is: How do a range of female Hong Kong fans, both those from the mainland and now working or studying in Hong Kong and those from Hong Kong who continue to live there, use their fandom of Li Yuchun to negotiate the complex mesh of everyday cultures that involve tensions and desires between Hong Kong and the mainland? Research is based on in personal interviews, responses to email questions, fan site commentary, and journalistic and scholarly writing on Li Yuchun.
