Session Submission Type: Organized Panel Proposal Application
We are living in times of increasing disaster events when natural and man-made catastrophes are deeply intertwined. Besides artists of other fields, theater directors and filmmakers felt a need to react to these kinds of traumatic events through their work. Analyzing artistic responses to various forms of disaster in Asian culture the panel will tackle questions such as: How can art address calamity in a meaningful way and/or provide solace to the people living in the affected areas? Which role do theater and film play as media of mourning and trauma processing? Are there privileged forms of representation? We will also investigate ecocritical perspectives and explore how gender constructions shape the representation of disaster. Scrutinizing various media narratives and taking into account perspectives from South East Asia, Taiwan and Japan, the panel aims to comparatively analyze patterns of negotiating disaster in Asian theater and film.
