This paper explores the revenue appropriation at the central level of the Ming government during the Korean War (1592-98). It begins with an introduction of the Ming central financial structure before the war. It then gleans data from the Ming Veritable Record and memorials and works of various senior officials involved in the War, such as Song Yingchang, Xing Jie, Zhao Zhigao, Zhang Wei, Shen Yiguan, etc., in order to arrive at a detailed account of the Ming central war finance. It also demonstrates the unique character of the sixteenth-century Ming fiscal machine: one that was far from monetized and centralized, but none the less found itself not incompetent in sustaining and ultimately winning the War.
