Professor Okudaira provides a general overview of the legal systems in Myanmar's history in an attempt to foster an understanding about the legal position of Buddhist women in regard to their marriage rights in Myanmar society. He examines customary laws concerning marriage from the Dhammathat during the Buddhist kingdom to the Marriage Act after the country's Independence in 1948 to put the current discussion on Ma-Ba-Tha in the context of a wider legal and historical contexts in Myanmar.
