Session Submission Type: Roundtable Proposal Application
Despite the importance of publication for an academic career, most scholars receive little or no guidance to the publication process. Scholars in Asia are further disadvantaged by the fact that English is often a second or third language, and English-language writing conventions differ somewhat from those of Asian-language scholarship.
Competition for space in major journals, particularly those with high impact factors, is intense. In the sciences and technology Asian scholars do well, and the overall output of citable research from Asia has overtaken that from Western Europe and that the United States. However, in the Social Sciences and Humanities, Asia lags far behind the West.
This roundtable draws together three experienced editors and one librarian to discuss issues relating to getting published in English-language scholarly journals. The presenters will provide practical suggestions for preparing manuscripts that meet the expectations of journal editors, and discuss current issues and trends relating to publication in scholarly journals, including open access, impact factors, mega-journals and alt-metrics.
