Online instructors are challenged to provide directions, guidance, and expectations in an autonomy-supportive way to promote their students’ engagement. This presentation draws current theories and research and discusses autonomy support as a strategy to enhance online students’ intrinsic motivation and self-regulated skills. Designers and instructors of online learning may gain ideas for promoting autonomy in writing syllabi, designing activities and assignments, and interacting with students in online learning environments.
