Creating International Connections: Instructional Design and Traditions of Didactics

Short Description

Historical and research developments in Instructional Design (ID) have recently been consolidated (e.g., Richey, Klein & Tracey, 2011). However, little attention has been paid to “didactics,” an earlier and still flourishing parallel field. It refers to “the science or art of teaching,” and was and remains most “highly elaborated… in Germany” (Dewey, 1911). This presentation will: 1) offer a practical overview of this field; 2) Compare and contrast its practical implications with those of ID.
