The purpose of this study is to understand the way that practicing designers experience building and using precedent knowledge, a form of knowledge which is considered to be fundamental to all forms of design practice, but which is still comparatively ill-defined. This study is part of a larger effort to describe precedent knowledge rigorously, and particularly to ensure that any scholarly definition of design precedent is fully informed by reports from designers in practice.
