Communication modes are a fundamental component in online collaborative learning. Previous literatures show discrepancies on benefits of different modes. This variation might be due to the lack of a framework that conceptualizes mode affordances on different collaborative task types. Drawing from research in distant learning and linguistic, we propose a three-dimension framework on online communication modes: SME (Synchronicity, Modality and Engagement) to connect online communication modes, affordances and task types.
