This roundtable proposes a literature review discussion of badges and micro-credentials in education. Micro-credentials are defined as an innovative approach to learning that creates visible, incremental pathways with digital badges as waypoints representing specific skill achievements. Self-regulated learning (SRL) is proposed as a theoretical framework to fortify and standardize micro-credentials as an educational approach at all levels. The three stages of SRL are described along with examples of the evolving integration in micro-credential research.
