This session focuses on five key areas – teacher presence, peer interaction, authentic learning, student diversity, assessment – that challenge the possibility of moving beyond the outdated “[video]lecture, reading, quiz, repeat” pattern currently dominant in the very large online courses (VLOCs) colleges are under increasing pressure to offer. We’ll discuss our own experiences and ideas about VLOCs in light of current scholarship about the barriers to and possible strategies for high quality, constructivist teaching in such classes.
