This book presents new knowledge about two aspects of how to design personalized competency-based education systems – what this paradigm of education should be like and how to transform existing school systems to this paradigm. Based on a review of over 50 schools that have transformed to PCBE with great success, we have identified 25 systemically interdependent principles for PCBE and organized them into six core ideas: competency-based education, leaner-centered instruction, restructured curriculum, new roles, a nurturing culture, and new organizational structures. We illustrate each principle with its implementation in a PCBE school we have studied. Guidance for the process of transformation begins with a framework for paradigm change that offers guidance for a transformation team to adopt values, understand principles, and conduct activities related to the transformation process for change on the classroom, school, and district levels. This is based on research literature and our experience facilitating such transformation.
