“just vote yes.*sigh*”: Facilitating Scientific Discussion in a Collaborative Problem and Game-based Learning Environment

Thu, Nov 4, 1:00 to 2:00pm CDT (1:00 to 2:00pm CDT), Virtual, Online 6B

Short Description

Students face challenges during problem-based learning (PBL) such as finishing tasks without deeply reasoning about the disciplinary ideas. Teacher scaffolding can push students to engage in deeper discussion by connecting conversations to disciplinary norms, eliciting decisions, and bringing gaps and disagreements to the surface. However, designing scaffolds can be demanding for teachers because it requires a delicate balance between structuring the discussion and encouraging student-led collaboration. In this presentation, we will discuss the specific strategies and design implications for adaptive scaffolding that were implemented in the game-based learning environment.
