An Empirical Analysis of Data Literacy in Comments on Open Education Resources

Wed, Oct 26, 4:30 to 4:45pm PDT (4:30 to 4:45pm PDT), Conf Center, Melrose 1

Short Description

Open educational resources (OER) offer free access to high-quality resources and equitable learning opportunities. In this study, we examine the New York Times Learning Network as an example of OER and its impacts on learning data literacy skills, an increasingly popular area of study. Analyzing students’ comments on interactive data visualizations we found that the design of data visualizations, activity prompts, and ways of encoding variables are critical in fostering data literacy skills.
