Short Description

This session will address the trends of learning environments in Japan based on two studies. First, we will report the results of our analysis of trends in learning environments in higher education. A questionnaire survey of learning commons and writing centers at Japanese four-year colleges and universities was conducted, and the results will be presented. Based on the results of the survey, we will discuss the establishment of Learning Commons and Writing Centers in Japanese universities, their utilization, effectiveness, and challenges. Next, we will introduce the learning environment design for improving the professional development of serving-teachers in primary and secondary schools by using thinking tools to nurture students` higher-order thinking skills. Based on the results of the conversation analysis, how Japanese teachers design lessons using thinking tools will be discussed. Finally, we will report the effectiveness and challenges in the learning environment for ICT-enhanced teaching practices.
