Short Description

Gender equality has long been promoted in schools, yet research studies show that gender bias continues to exist in children’s books in both print and electronic media. To raise gender awareness in readers, this paper examines the gender representation in Level 1 electronic books read by beginning readers in Highlights Library. It examines the male-to-female character ratio through the book titles, cover illustrations and central characters in a selection of 93 children’s picture books.
