Instructional Simulations for Social Justice: Considering Intersectionalities of Communities with Geographic Information Systems

Short Description

Computer simulations are effective in communicating procedural knowledge (what and how) and conceptual knowledge (why). Coupling geographic information systems (GIS) tools with computer simulations allows for visualization of social justice concepts, such as the overlapping effects of societal inequities. This session shares a design case in which GIS tools were embedded within a computer simulation with the learning objective of being able to explain how intersecting aspects of identities affect lived experience.
