Using a cross-case thematic comparison of Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) studies we focused on distinctions among student reactions to the different systems used to supplement a full class field trip experience. Results show that increasing higher-order learning and improving the learning design based on the affordances of a given technology can improve learning outcomes in VLEs. This suggests more accessible virtual learning spaces like the browser-based VLE can compare better to more immersive VLEs.
