Low student contributions in asynchronous online discussions (AODs) is an enduring problem. Little contribution translates to surface levels of learning. To address this problem, we theorized that student curiosity plays a prominent role in student participation in AODs. It influences information seeking in response to emerging knowledge gaps. The results of this mixed-methods study may be of interest to instructors and instructional designers who use or research AODs in their work.
