Abstract

This paper is an investigation of the work being done in education by the Native Pacific Islander Educational Network (NPIEN) in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Utilizing the Minutes of the Regular Board Meeting of NPIEN from its founding in 2006 to the present and interviews of Board members and a survey of mentors, I was able to investigate the organization and educational work being done by this organization. The research methodology is historical and qualitative. This investigation reveals that NPIEN is making an educational difference. Their efforts includes fundraising, grant seeking to fund the education of Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander children, and an enriching mentoring program, which benefits students, teachers, family members and the mentors themselves.
