Abstract

1. Recent research in Norway shows that many teachers feel a high level of stress and exhaustion and that many opt to exit the profession before they reach retirement age. Consequently, in Norway there are relatively few teachers above the age of 60. In addition, a 2002 study suggests that 1 out of 4 teachers in Norway may be suffering from burnout or, at the very least, major job related stress symptoms; and this was before the introduction of the 2006 Knowledge Reform which placed additional demands on teachers. This paper proposes a model delineating forces leading to teacher burnout.
