Paper Summary

The Experiences of Girls with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders in a Gender-Responsive Support Group

Sat, April 14, 4:05 to 6:05pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, West Room 113

Abstract

This research aimed to fill the gap in knowledge of girls with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) by examining the experiences and perceptions of adolescent females with EBD as they participated in a 10-week, gender-responsive support group. Basic interpretive qualitative research was used to give voice to this understudied population (Merriam, 2002). Emergent themes were found in the areas of perception of self, friendship, connectedness to others, and the ability to establish and maintain relationships. Lessons learned about girls with EBD, therapeutic environments, and the use of gender-responsive curriculum will be discussed.
