Mon, April 16, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: Second Level, East Room 19&20

Abstract

How can music educators address the global conflicts, environmental catastrophes, and corruption that threaten the moral fabric of contemporary individuals and societies? The purpose of this action research was to use music as transformative pedagogy for social justice and peace in a humanities course. Qualitative analysis of the data from the three research instruments suggested that the ‘transformative pedagogy in music appreciation’ could be a persuasive teaching tool in conscientizing college students (n=210) in promoting the values of justice and peace today. While this research does not negate the potential of music as a source of violence, the present investigation offers the possibilities of music in transforming society towards social justice and peace.
