This paper explores the development of prefigurative educational practice whereby young people learn through leading positive change in their communities. The Future Leaders programme explores the interface between the teachings of Paulo Freire with Education for Sustainable Development and Citizenship Education and consists of the following three inter-connected elements:
1. Students voicing their community living concerns
2. Open space for dialogue and enquiry – critically considering these issues from different perspectives.
3. Collective community action
Adopting a participatory and dialogic pedagogy this innovation encountered young people as being concerned over a wide variety of issues pertaining to well being at both local and global levels. It also revealed their potential to learn through creative and collective action as democratic citizens.
