InfoViz: A Necessary Element for the Future of Hybrid and Online Learning and E-Assessment

Abstract

Information visualization involves the visual, and sometimes interactive, presentation and organization of complex data in a clear, compelling, and convincing representation. Although information visualization research and methods are prevalent in the diverse fields of healthcare, statistics, economics, information technology, computer science, and politics, little to no research or exploration has existed in the field of instructional design. In this paper we provide a brief background of information visualization, discuss various types of data and presentation, explore the emerging potential for visualization-driven sense- and decision-making for teachers and students, provide examples of contemporary interactive visualizations in education, and discuss opportunities to move forward in research and design in this emerging area.
